The vapor releases very toxic chemicals called light hydrocarbons which pollute the air. The light hydrocarbons present in oil are the same ingredients used in making gasoline and jet fuel. They are highly flammable. That's one reason why oil spills are very dangerous because they can easily catch on fire.
