HELP TO THE RESCUE!
The United Nations' treaty of 1983, The Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, created MARPOL (Marine Pollution). MARPOL helped reduce the amount of oil spilled at sea by tankers during the 1980's. Next, the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 passed. Because of this act, oil-producing companies have put millions of dollars into oil spill prevention and fast methods of response should a spill happen.
