Earth's Ups and Downs

Even though you may not have noticed it, the surface of the land is always changing. Over thousands or even millions of years, the earth's surface is built up and worn away by natural events and elements.

Forces deep inside the earth cause the surface to change. When the tectonic plates move together, apart, or slide by each other, an earthquake rumbles, a volcano erupts, a valley on land or in the ocean is created, or a mountain begins to build!
