Scientifically, all living things have been classified in groups called species. There are many, many different species. Dogs are a species of animal. Cats are an animal species, too. Tarantulas are a species of spider. People are members of the human species.
Species come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Each species plays an important role in keeping our earth healthy. For example, one very interesting species of mammals is called platypus. It eats food from the bottom of lakes and streams and helps keep the waters clean.
