Forest fires can also be put out by getting rid of the wood that fuels them. Fire fighters remove tree branches to keep the fire from spreading. They also create firebreaks by cutting down trees or starting small controlled fires beyond the fire's border. When the flames arrive at the firebreak, the fire goes out because there is no fuel to burn.
| DID YOU KNOW? A "bucket brigade" was an early fire fighting method. A line of people formed between the fire and a water source, like a stream or river. Buckets were filled with water and quickly passed from one person to the next until the water reached the flames.
