Fire fighters use airplanes to drop water on forest fires. This cools down the fire and helps smother it. These are called aerial drops. The planes fill up with water from a nearby lake. Then, they drop the water on the fire.
Other types of aerial drops are used to smother fires. Dirt, sand, or chemicals are dropped on the forest fire to remove the air or oxygen that makes the fire burn. The chemicals, called fire retardants, smother and slow down the spread of the fire.
